Ariane 6: fourth Amazon Leo mission takes shape in Kourou, no date set yet

LE-04 is the fourth of 18 launches under Arianespace's contract with Amazon. Trackers point to 7 October, but without an official window the date is only a guide.

Arianespace is preparing the fourth Ariane 6 launch for Amazon's megaconstellation, mission LE-04 (Leo Europe 4). There is still no official date. Sites that track launch schedules point to 7 October as the earliest opportunity, but the status remains "TBD". Until Arianespace publishes its usual announcement with a launch window, I would treat that date as a guide rather than a promise.

The context, at least, is clear. The contract between Amazon and Arianespace covers 18 launches, and three have flown so far. LE-01 in February was the first flight of Ariane 64, the most powerful version of the rocket with four solid-fuel boosters, and carried 32 satellites. LE-02 repeated the feat at the end of April. Then in June, LE-03 used the new, more powerful P160C boosters for the first time and put up 36 satellites, the heaviest payload ever flown on an Ariane rocket. With that mission Arianespace reached 100 Amazon Leo satellites in less than five months.

The P160C boosters are built by Italy's Avio, so every Amazon flight is also a small piece of good news for Rome's defence and space business. For Europe, though, the irony remains. The busiest customer of Europe's heavy rocket is an American company building a rival to Starlink.

For those who follow the numbers: the launch is from the ELA-4 pad in Kourou, French Guiana, flying north-east. If LE-04 repeats LE-03's configuration, the payload will be 36 satellites, but that has not yet been officially confirmed.
